Malaysia ranked a notable thirty fifthvol ranked amongst 120 countries on the Energy Transition Index (ETI) for 2023. The country’s rating of 61.7 confirmed that the Malaysian government is strongly specializing in the country’s energy transition.
Malaysia has moved to guide the region as the federal government has published its strategic plans to realize net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These plans include the National Energy Transition Action Plan and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Action Plan.

With these plans, the federal government has made a strategic decision to significantly increase the country’s installed renewable energy capability. Their daring goal is to achieve 70% by 2050, a major increase from the present goal of 40% in 2035. This daring goal distinguishes them as one of the crucial ambitious in Southeast Asia.
The World Economic Forum publishes the ETI to evaluate and understand countries’ progress within the energy transition based on two pillars of system performance and readiness to transition towards a protected, sustainable and equitable energy future.
Nordic countries, including Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, consistently maintained their leading global positions through 2023. Meanwhile, Malaysia was the one Southeast Asian country to rank among the many top 35 globally. Vietnam was right behind it – forty third.R&D place with a rating of 58.9.
Thailand and Indonesia ranked 54th respectivelyvol and 55vol world podium respectively. The two countries showed a slight discrepancy of their scores of 55.9 and 55.8. As Indonesia has high future energy demand, the country has been recognized for its significant progress in energy transformation, together with other major emerging economies, namely China, India and Brazil.
Even though Singapore was ranked seventiethvol rating as a consequence of its rating index of 53.7, it’s price noting that Singapore, together with India, is considered one of only two countries which have shown significant progress in all indicators falling under the system performance pillar.
Laos and Cambodia ranked side by side in 83rd placeR&D and 84vol places and received a similar rating of 52.1. The Philippines was among the many 30 lowest scores, 94th to be precisevol place with a rating of fifty.2. Brunei Darussalam had an index rating of 47.3, rating 105vol place.
Despite its lowest position within the region, Brunei Darussalam has make clear the proven fact that it’s considered one of only three countries on the planet, together with Ghana and Albania, to have shown a powerful and sustained push to extend energy diversification. No data for Burma and East Timor.
