Guests from afar: The long journey of Siberian predators to the Sanggabuana Mountains in Indonesia

An interesting natural phenomenon occurred in Indonesia, where the migration of hundreds of birds of prey from Siberia in Russia was detected. This flock of birds of prey was observed to have landed within the Sanggabuana Mountains forest area in Tegalwaru District of Karawang Regency in late October 2023.

News of this phenomenon first appeared in a report by Burung Indonesia, a non-profit organization that goals to guard wild birds. According to the organization’s observations, hundreds of birds of prey were migrating along the eastern continental corridor, passing through China, the Malay Peninsula and ultimately reaching destinations in Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Ria Saryanthi, Communications Partnership Advisor in Burung, Indonesia, explained that this natural phenomenon is a daily occurrence where these birds move all year long, breeding in warmer places in winter and waiting for the fitting moment to to return to the place of birth. He also mentioned several species of birds which have been identified as migrating from Siberia and visiting the Sanggabuana Mountains to breed, similar to Pernis ptilorhynchus, Accipiter gularis, Accipiter soloensis and Merops philippinus.

Using binoculars and telescopes, they tracked the movements of hundreds of migratory birds. Interestingly, some locals also captured the moment with their DSLR cameras, and the outcomes may be seen in lots of cafes around Sempur Peak. Ria also revealed that she is working with the Sanggabuana Conservation Foundation (SCF) in an effort to watch and protect the species.

The birds of prey themselves have similar physical characteristics to eagles and are amongst probably the most ceaselessly migrating birds of prey. Their principal features are keen eyesight, eight sharp claws and a curved beak.
