A multiracial Malaysia could be unconstitutional, Mahathir says, taking aim at Anwar’s government

Promoting multiracialism is unconstitutional Malaysia– says the country’s two-time former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.

This is because Malaysia as a multiracial country isn’t mentioned within the federal structure, he said.

“I am only raising the provisions of the constitution. Is defending the constitution illegal? Instead, it is unconstitutional to promote a multiracial country,” Mahathir said in an announcement on Monday.

“Is the government acting against the rule of law – including the constitution – which fails to mention that Malaysia is a multiracial country? Instead, the constitution emphasizes the Malay-Malaysia relationship.”

Mahathir was responding to an appeal by Huzaidi Husin, information chief of Umno’s Bukit Gelugor unit, for the elder statesman to stop stoking racial sentiments. In his response, Mahathir also jumped on the bandwagon composition of the cupboard.
“Yes, DAP [the Democratic Action Party] has only four ministers. But there are 40 DAP MPs in the government. If DAP withdraws its support… Anwar Ibrahimthe government will collapse,” he said.

“Therefore, Anwar must follow the DAP manifesto by specifically making a multiracial film Malaya [Malay land] and replacing the official religion of Islam with a secular country and a country without an official religion.”

Huzaidi said on June 16 that Mahathir had no point in stoking racial sentiments because nearly all of Malays were more keen on the country’s economic revival.

Malaysia will hold state polls in August, which will probably be a key test for Prime Minister Anwar

Huzaidi also denied that DAP has much influence in the federal government, because the party has only 4 ministers.

“Enough of manipulating Malays by exploiting racial issues to gain power and positions,” Huzaidi said.
