Vietnam is breaking its own record resulting from the rise in photovoltaic capability

Its solar installations added 9.3 gigawatts to the national grid.

Vietnam has increased its solar capability eightfold with a series of rooftop solar installations that can add 9.3 GW to the national grid in 2020.

This is significantly greater than 378 MW in 2019. ASEAN Post noted that of the installed capability of 9.3 GW, installations price roughly 6.0 GW were only inbuilt December 2020, just before the expiry of the rooftop feed-in tariff.

In 2019, Vietnamese installations added 4.5 GW to the national grid lower than two years after the introduction of feed-in tariffs. The country’s latest record will make it the world’s third-largest solar market in 2020.

Vietnam currently has around 101,000 rooftop solar installations because it has attracted investment offers from the residential and industrial sectors.

Efforts to extend renewable energy sources are also in step with the brand new draft Energy Development Plan No. 8, which showed that Vietnam wants renewable energy to dominate the sector by 2030 and beyond to 2045.

Under the eighth PDP, Vietnam will likely halt the development of recent coal-fired power plants and forestall the development of recent coal-fired power plants in 2026–2030. The Asean Post noted that the 9.5 GW coal projects previously included within the PDP have been removed and the 7.6 GW coal project has been postponed to the post-2030 period.

Solar and wind power are expected to offer 28% of total system capability in 2030 and 41% in 2045.

If Vietnam’s renewable energy sector continues to develop, it is going to largely contribute to achieving ASEAN’s goal of 23% of its total energy mix coming from renewable sources by 2025.
