Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. visited President Jokowi on the Presidential Palace in Bogor on September 5, 2022. It was his first state visit after taking the oath. The two leaders discussed the 2 countries’ lively and multi-faceted cooperation on defense, maritime, border, economic and people-to-people cooperation. They also exchanged views on crucial issues affecting the region and the world.
According to a press release from the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, in the course of the state visit, each presidents will witness the signing of several key agreements within the areas of defense and culture, in addition to a comprehensive motion plan that may establish the bilateral priorities of each countries for the following five years.
There are 4 cooperation agreements which have been agreed between Indonesia and the Philippines:
1. Plan of Action (PoA) between the Governments of Indonesia and the Philippines 2022-2027
It is a strategic document that becomes a reference point for efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the 2 countries. This Plan of Action (PoA) covers various specific strategic actions within the areas of politics, law, security, economy, culture, tourism, consular affairs, protection and mutual support for candidacies in international institutions.
2. Agreement on cooperation in the sphere of defense and security
This is a renewal of the Philippine-Indonesian Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in 1997. Areas of cooperation include joint exercises and operations, human resources development, development of defense technologies and logistics cooperation to make sure security within the territories of each countries.
3. Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation
This cooperation goals to develop the culture of each countries, which incorporates participation in artistic festivals (movies, music, book fairs, etc.), translation of literary works, prevention of illegal trade in cultural goods and other agreed types of cooperation.
4. Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the event and promotion of the creative economy
This cooperation facilitates the event and promotion of the creative industries of each countries, including creative services, audiovisual services, art, books, media and other agreed forms. They will establish a joint Indonesia-Philippines Task Force to watch and evaluate its implementation.
