Malaysia is the 5G champion in Southeast Asia

Malaysia is ready to make a reputation for itself on the worldwide stage and match developed economies with the nationwide implementation of 5G demonstration projects (5GDP), led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Progress within the deployment of fifth generation (5G) mobile technology will even redefine the readiness of Malaysian industry and small and medium-sized enterprises to face the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

In a press release today, MCMC said that through 5GDP, Malaysia has laid the inspiration for leadership in 5G deployment in Southeast Asia.

“A recent study by the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) shows that 5G deployment could contribute about RM12.7 billion to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in addition to create about 40,000 recent jobs in the subsequent five years.

“Work is underway on an end-to-end 5G ecosystem with various new approaches that include network and infrastructure sharing among service providers, policy revisions and joint ventures,” it said.

Thanks to this technology, many progressive services will appear, from advanced virtual reality, autonomous vehicles to distant medical surgery, he said.

5G will even provide ultra-reliable, low-latency communications, improved energy efficiency, and greater privacy and security.

MCMC says 5PKB in Langkawi covers 35 use cases across six industries across 25 operational 5G locations, actively operating from October 2019 to March 2020, with a complete investment of RM101 million.

This represents greater than half of the full 72 use cases in six states: Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

It said 5G use cases in Langkawi include smart agriculture, smart airport, smart city, smart traffic light solutions, real-time medical data transfer, 5G live video surveillance, distant consultation and virtual tourism.

Additionally, there are three use cases in Langkawi Port, namely digital border control, smart vessel tracking, in addition to geofencing and smart perimeters.

Ahead of Sunday’s launch of 5GDP, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad visited two of 5GDP’s operational sites, the Langkawi District and Land Office and the Langkawi Police Headquarters in Kuah, where he demonstrated use cases similar to the 5G Command Center, eKelas, smart agriculture in addition to solutions for security and smart city.

“He also visited Sultanah Maliha Hospital to oversee the progress of digital health use cases, namely real-time medical data transfer and network-connected emergency services,” it said.

The launch of the 5GDP initiative took place on the Langkawi International Convention Center, marking a big milestone for the country in implementing its digital economy agenda.

In conjunction with the launch, MCMC also organized its first international conference on 5G Malaysia on January 20-21 in Langkawi, with renowned international and native speakers and industry panelists.

The conference shall be dedicated to discussing the event and implementation prospects of 5G in Malaysia and the world.

During the conference, MCMC Chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak will submit the ultimate report of the 5G Task Force to the Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo.

The report highlights the prerequisites for 5G deployment, similar to infrastructure requirements and spectrum management solutions.

It also covers regulatory issues, similar to working with state and native authorities and addressing safety, security and health concerns.
