President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday called for ASEAN unity amid growing rivalry between major regional powers as Indonesia inaugurated the brand new ASEAN Secretariat constructing in Jakarta, Jakarta Post Office reported.
The constructing was inaugurated on ASEAN Day, which falls on August 8 yearly to commemorate the founding of ASEAN by its five founding members – Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines in 1967. Jokowi said ASEAN must have the option to keep up its relevance as a regional grouping within the face of worldwide challenges.
According to BetweenThe constructing positioned on Sisingamangaraja Street consists of two 16-story towers connected by a 41.3 m long viaduct.
“Indonesia has made efforts to facilitate ASEAN to work quickly, robustly, effectively and efficiently. We are building this building based on this thought,” Jokowi noted in his inaugural speech within the fundamental hall of the brand new ASEAN Secretariat constructing.
The President symbolically handed over the important thing to the constructing to ASEAN Secretariat-General Lim Jock Hoi on the occasion of the inauguration of the brand new constructing.
Thursday’s event included the creation of a time capsule containing the hopes and visions of ASEAN member states for the longer term – which can be opened in 2042, on the seventy fifth anniversary of the signing of the ASEAN Declaration.
