Singapore’s defense spending in 2023 can be SGD 17.98 billion ($13.4 billion). This amount represents a rise of 10% over the initial budget for 2022 and a rise of 5.6% over the revised allocation of S$17.02 billion.
S$17.11 billion, a rise of 4.2%, can be spent on operations under the 2023 defense budget. This amount, S$17.04 billion, is especially intended for the Singapore Armed Services (SAF).
According to Singapore’s Ministry of Defense (MINDEF), the SAF grant will cover the prices of buying military equipment, maintaining camps and equipment, in addition to paying salaries and allowances. She said that in comparison with the revised 2022 expenditure, the JPK allocation increased by almost S$694 million.
Additionally, SGD 871.3 million was allocated for development expenditure within the 2023 budget, a rise of 43%. According to MINDEF, a part of the numerous increase will be attributed to the resumption of initiatives that were placed on hold through the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to MINDEF, the Covid-19 pandemic previously halted military operations, which also led to a rise within the initial defense budget for 2022. “Increased inflationary pressure” on operational activities, training and development initiatives also contributed to the budget increase, he said.

The Singapore government announced on February 24 that it might exercise its choice to purchase eight more Lockheed Martin F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) fighters, along with the unique 4 it committed to buying in 2019. When the F- 16 SAF aircraft will retire within the mid-2030s and get replaced by the F-35B aircraft.
