Malaysia’s Mahathir says he’s able to form a ‘unity government’ if Muhyiddin’s budget fails to pass parliament on Tuesday

Malaysiaformer prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and former rival Razaleigh Hamzah held a joint press conference on Monday to announce they were able to form a “unity government” if the country’s parliament doesn’t adopt a budget on Tuesday.

The two distanced themselves from the opposition Pakatan Harapan coalition and said they weren’t cooperating with any United Malays National Organization (Umno) parliamentarians who’re on trial within the courts.

If I get enough votes, I do not mind becoming prime minister,” Mahathir said. “We discussed it [finding] ways to return back as a progressive country. We realize that our country has too many problems… Everyone in the federal government does [in it] for their very own political advantages and enormous earnings.

“We must pursue a policy of developing the country, not for our parties and not for ourselves.”

Mahathir said he was not working with him Anwar Ibrahimhead of the opposition People’s Justice Party, said that “Anwar is just not talking to me”, adding that he doesn’t wish to cooperate with parliamentarians tainted by scandals, equivalent to one other former prime minister Najib Razak Or Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi even in the event that they vote against the present Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassinbudget on Tuesday.

“They can vote against the 2021 budget, but they will not be part of the new government,” Mahathir said.

Although each have repeatedly stressed that they will not be aspiring to be a substitute prime minister, Mahathir has made it clear that he wouldn’t mind taking the highest job for a 3rd time if he were to receive sufficient support from other parliamentarians.

Razaleigh said that although he’s an Umno MP, he can support whoever he wants.

Asked if he was able to face disciplinary consequences for not following the party line, he replied: “What disciplinary action? I am sharing a platform here with Dr Mahathir for the good of the country.”

He added that he wouldn’t participate in debates on the budget on Tuesday and wouldn’t vote for it.
