Malaysia’s Mahathir sees a brand new role as an influence broker within the country’s politics

In an interview Friday, he told The Associated Press that Malaysia’s ruling coalition is unlikely to call for early elections due to political conflicts and predicts his recent ethnic Malay party will probably be an influence broker in the following polls.

“We will not form the government ourselves… we are a third party. We believe that we are not very big, but big enough that we can act as an intermediary in the country,” said the two-time prime minister.

Mahathir said neither Muhyiddin’s new coalition nor the opposition led by him believed in it Anwar Ibrahim may obtain more than 50% of the votes. He said that if Pejuang won just 30 seats, he could become king and then he would decide which side he would support.
Mahathir he resigned in protest in late February after Muhyiddin pulled their Bersatu party out of the ruling alliance and formed a Malay-centered government with the opposition. It included the former prime minister’s party Najib Razakwho is on trial on multiple corruption charges.

But Muhyiddin’s government is shaky, with only a slim two-seat majority in parliament, and he faces pressure from his allies to call for early elections.

[Muhyiddin] he’s not so sure about calling for an election now unless he wants to commit suicide

Mahathir said Muhyiddin would likely try to hold on until 2023 rather than seek quick polls. His Bersatu overshadows Najib’s party, which will want to regain the position of prime minister after the elections, he said.

The parties in Muhyiddin’s coalition are divided and “he is not very confident in calling for elections now unless he wants to commit suicide,” Mahathir said. He warned that a victory for Muhyiddin’s government in the elections would be a disaster Malaysiagrowth and development.

Muhyiddin created a bloated cabinet and appointed politicians to replace specialists running government-linked companies in order to buy their support, he said. Recently, the government also withdrew from the proposed bill limiting the prime minister’s term of office to two terms.

“I think corruption is the worst thing in this country right now… if they win, I’m sad because I think this government is as corrupt as Najib’s government,” he said. His party in Pejuang he contested the recent state by-election and lost badly because he said many voters were paid to vote for the government. He did not provide any evidence.

In hindsight, Mahathir admitted that he lacked the foresight to prevent the overthrow of his government. Although he had heard rumors of attempts to form a government through the back door, he said he “didn’t think it would happen” nor did he expect Malays to support Najib recently convicted, he faces 12 years in prison in his first corruption trial.
He said vote buying would make it harder for Pejuang to attract ethnic Malay voters, who make up two-thirds of Malaysia’s 23 million people. There are large Chinese and Indian ethnic minorities. A recent poll also showed high approval for Muhyiddin over his conduct coronavirus pandemic.

“I want to win the KSM title… ‘kerja sampai mati’ (work until I die),” Mahathir said. “If I can do something about corruption, I will probably be glad, that is all. I’m not talking about legacy. What people take into consideration me doesn’t matter to me because I’ll die and be gone.

On the international front, Mahathir said he appreciated the US president Donald Trumpre-election campaign with anxiety. He said that Trump didn’t take heed to experts on the pandemic and, likening it to the flu, caused a pointy increase in infections within the US and plenty of people died.

“It can be [also] will probably be very harmful to global relations because this man is irrational,” he said.

“Not all American presidents are superb. Many of them make mistakes, but he’s worse. If he’s re-elected, I feel sorry for America and the remaining of the world,” Mahathir said.
