Facebook’s first community hub in Southeast Asia

Social media giant Facebook launched the Ruang Komunal Indonesia community center at One Pacific Place in South Jakarta on Wednesday.

Facebook’s director of political programs, Clair Deevy, said at a press conference that it’s the first space of its kind on this planet and is obtainable to any community group, not only Facebook groups.

Deevy said that over the past two years, the technology company has been working with many community groups and non-profit organizations in Indonesia which have had difficulty connecting people face-to-face, and that Ruang Komunal Indonesia was established in response to this example.

“We felt there was a possibility in Indonesia [particularly] Jakarta to create an area where online communities can meet offline,” she said.

Ruang Komunal Indonesia was designed as a versatile facility that might allow groups to host a wide range of activities, from presentations to meetings, and was equipped with a small kitchen and Wi-Fi connection.

Groups wishing to make use of the available space are asked to register and pre-book the space online.

“We’re in search of really diverse groups.

“The focus is really on groups that unite and build communities and create positive content [and] They want to unite people from different backgrounds to create a strong community,” she said.
