Police said a German national was arrested on the Indonesian resort island of Bali after a series of attacks and property damage sparked by depression attributable to family conflicts within the country.
Police said the 37-year-old suspect had been in Bali for seven months, looking for solace following his parents’ divorce and the next death of his father.
He is accused of hitting a motorcyclist on June 12, which left the girl with minor injuries. On Saturday, he reportedly vandalized a villa in the favored resort of Kuta, where he allegedly threatened an worker with a knife.
“He admitted to affected by depression as a result of his parents’ divorce and his father’s death,” Kuta police chief I Ketut Agus Pasek Sudina told reporters. “We plan to conduct a psychological evaluation and further testing.”
Ketut said that before these incidents, the German had also stolen a drink from a mini market. He also resisted arrest, throwing stones at officers before he was overpowered, he added.
Police said the person was charged with assault, destruction of property and threats, crimes punishable by as much as 10 years in prison under Indonesian law.
