Indonesian researcher wins King Faisal Prize

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, presented awards to the winners of the 2018 King Faisal International Prize (KFIP) in Riyadh on Monday evening, March 27.

The ceremony, held on the Great Hall of the Prince Sultan on the Al-Faisaliah Centre, was attended by Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Mecca, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Chairman of the King Faisal Foundation, in addition to several other princes, senior government officials, academics and lecturers.

King Salman congratulated the award winners in five essential categories: Service to Islam, Islamic Studies, Arabic Language and Literature, Medicine, and Science.

The excellent news is Indonesian professor Irwandi Jaswir, who works as Deputy Dean of the International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART) AND Secretary of the Council of Professors of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM)received King Faisal Award for Service to Islam.

Jaswir has collaborated with other scientists to develop recent methods for rapidly detecting non-halal substances in food, cosmetics and other consumer goods utilized by Muslims. An example of such methods is the “Portable Electronic Nose” that detects the presence of alcohol and lard (pork fat) in food and drinks in a matter of seconds.

An example of such a way is the “portable electronic nose” that detects the presence of alcohol and lard (pork fat) in food and drinks inside seconds.

Other researchers and academics from Jordan, Tunisia, the US and the UK also received awards within the categories of Islamic studies, Arabic language and literature, medicine and science.

The award consists of a certificate with a hand-written calligraphic summary of the winner’s work, a commemorative 24-karat, 200-gram gold medal, and a money prize of $200,000.
