Cut less – plant more
Indonesian designer Singgih Susilo Kartono is the creator of Magno. He and a team of 35 young craftsmen produce individual radios in his home village in Temanggung, a distant area in central Java. Singgih’s philosophy for the corporate focuses on long-term ecological goals and the involvement of local people. For this reason, Singgih’s team cuts only 80 trees every year and plants 10,000 on plantations. His slogan is “less wood, more work; cut less, plant more.”

Singgih not only replaces cut trees, but additionally plants many latest ones and provides jobs for his community.
Due to the recent acontextual development imposed on his village, many farmers lost their farms and were forced to either find latest work in town or stay within the village with the bare minimum to survive. Singgih introduced crafts as a substitute economic activity, appropriate to the dynamics of the village in the encircling environment.

In the Singgih workshop, former farmers learn their craft. This latest knowledge, combined with the work that Singgih provides, allows them to proceed living of their home village and supporting the community.
Each wood radio requires as much as 16 hours from the time of initial personalization and over 100 different steps to rigorously wrapping the radio in wrapping paper. Only a small variety of radios are built this fashion per thirty days.
