Celebrating a growing strategic partnership: Indonesia and Russia rejoice Russian National Day in Jakarta

Diplomats, senior government officials, business leaders, scientists and members of the diplomatic community gathered at Raffles Jakarta on June 29, 2026, to rejoice the National Day of the Russian Federation. The reception, hosted by HE Sergey Tolchenov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Indonesia, and HE Yevgeny Zagaynov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to ASEAN, reflected the growing dynamics of Indonesia-Russia relations within the areas of diplomacy, trade, education, energy, culture, and regional cooperation.

Distinguished Indonesian guests included Coordinating Minister for Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat, in addition to ambassadors, government officials and representatives of the business world.

Partnership reaching a brand new level

In his introductory remarks, Ambassador Sergei Tolchenov emphasized the importance of Indonesia as one in all Russia’s key strategic partners in Southeast Asia. He highlighted the remarkable progress achieved in the primary half of 2026, including enhanced political dialogue, expanded economic cooperation, educational exchanges, tourism and Russia’s growing engagement with ASEAN. He reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to deepen cooperation with Indonesia based on mutual respect, equality and customary interests, while expressing confidence that the partnership will proceed to expand in strategic sectors.

Airlangga Hartarto, representing the Indonesian government, coordinating minister for economy, confirmed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with Russia. He stressed the importance of expanding bilateral trade, investment, food and energy security and business partnerships, expressing optimism that each countries will find a way to unlock recent opportunities through closer cooperation in strategic industries. His remarks reflected Indonesia’s commitment to constructing mutually useful partnerships that support sustainable economic growth and prosperity within the region.

The reception also took place just days after the ASEAN-Russia summit in Kazan, commemorating the thirty fifth anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia dialogue, which highlighted Moscow’s growing involvement in Southeast Asia. Indonesia continued to play a crucial role on this partnership, while maintaining its long-standing independent and lively foreign policy.

Expanding cooperation to many sectors

Indonesia and Russia have had diplomatic relations since 1950, and bilateral cooperation has grown steadily over the a long time. Bilateral trade has exceeded $4 billion annually, and each countries proceed to explore opportunities within the areas of energy, agriculture, digital technologies, higher education, defense and investment.

One of the highlights of the reception was an exhibition presented by the Russian state nuclear company Rosatom, showcasing growing cooperation in the sphere of peaceful nuclear technology. As a part of the show, a gathering between President Prabowo Subianto and Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev took place on May 12, 2026, during which each side discussed the probabilities of developing cooperation in the sphere of peaceful nuclear energy for the advantage of each nations. The initiative reflected Indonesia’s interest in diversifying its future clean energy mix while strengthening technological cooperation with Russia.
