Malaysian activist arrested over reports of China’s planned Forest City casino in Johor

Malaysian political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also often called Chegubard, was detained on the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters in connection along with his post about alleged talks regarding the opening casino IN Forest City in Johor, as reported by Bloomberg.

In a press release by lawyer Rafique Rashida, he stated that the investigation is being conducted under Art. 4 section 1 of the Sedition Act of 1948 and Art. 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998.

He added that the applying for temporary arrest can be considered on the District Police Headquarters around 8.45 a.m. on Sunday.

The report also claimed that the casino would revive a $100 billion real estate project.

Genting Malaysia Bhd said neither the corporate nor its vp and general manager Lim Kok Thay were involved in talks with the federal government about opening a casino in Forest City.

The company denied claims in a Bloomberg report on Thursday that Lim was involved in such a discussion.

Before, MalaysiaPrime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Berjaya Corp Bhd also denied the reports, saying discussions were held to debate opening a casino in Forest City.

“Genting Malaysia Bhd would like to state that neither the company nor Tan Sri Lim were involved in any such discussions or meetings and the claims made are untrue,” Genting Malaysia said in a press release.

He also called on all parties to right away stop publishing and spreading disinformation, remove the claims and supply the general public with the vital clarifications to stop further confusion.

“Genting Malaysia Bhd will not hesitate to take further action deemed necessary to protect its interests and those of its stakeholders,” it said.

Anwar also previously assured that there are not any plans to issue Forest City with a second casino license within the country. “Those who raised the casino license issue lied. It’s not true. That’s a lie,” Anwar said.

Berjaya Corp said the article contained “inaccurate information” that misrepresented its alleged involvement in discussions with Anwar about the Forest City project.

The company’s statement said its founder Vincent Tan was not involved in such discussions and rejected the false claims made in the article.

Johor Mentri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi also denied reports that a casino would be opened in the state. “The rumor is seen as an act of sabotage to defame the name of Forest City and Johor,” Onn Hafiz said in a press release.
