Brunei will supply hydrogen to Japan in 2020

Brunei will supply greater than 200 metric tons (MT) of hydrogen to Japan in 2020, said Energy Minister Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein. He made these remarks yesterday on the opening ceremony of the Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Development (AHEAD) hydrogenation demonstration plant on the Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK) in Belait District.

Operated and managed by a consortium of Japanese firms, the plant constitutes the primary global hydrogen supply chain from Brunei Darussalam to Japan.

The Minister was welcomed on site by AHEAD President Hideki Endo.

  • Hydrogen transport capability 210 tons per 12 months at full capability
    (Equivalent to roughly 40,000 full refuelings of a fuel cell vehicle)
    Duration of the demonstration project Scheduled for the 12 months (2020)
    Hydrogen source Hydrogen production by steam reforming using gas produced in LNG installations (Brunei Darussalam)
    Hydrogen’s destination For use as fuel in a thermal power plant (Kawasaki Coastal Region)
